Starting materials
Which substances were supplied? In what concentrations and chemical forms? Were they made by the proposed preceding step?
FROM CHEMICAL INGREDIENTS TO A LIVING SYSTEM
How can chemistry without living cells supply, assemble, and sustain the molecules and processes that life needs? Explore the challenges, the experimental results, and the steps that remain to be connected.
Prebiotic means before life. Synthesis means making a substance through chemical reactions. The question is how these reactions occurred and became connected before cellular machinery existed.
Choose a stage, then a challenge. This groups related problems; it does not prescribe a historical sequence.
FROM A LABORATORY RESULT TO AN ORIGIN SCENARIO
A successful experiment establishes what happened under its stated conditions. A proposed natural history needs an additional account of how those conditions, substances, and transitions became available. These questions help keep the claims precise.
Which substances were supplied? In what concentrations and chemical forms? Were they made by the proposed preceding step?
What temperature, acidity, salts, minerals, light, or cycling were used? What evidence supports those conditions in the proposed setting?
Were products purified, transferred, or replaced? Are natural mechanisms proposed for those steps? Does the next reaction tolerate the actual product mixture?
Was the desired substance identified securely? How much accumulated, how long did it survive, and was its chemical form suitable for the next process?
Can the process continue when resources are consumed? Are copying, growth, or division repeated, and which inputs or catalysts must be supplied again?
Did the experiment show a molecule, a reaction, a network, a copying process, or a reproducing compartment? Describe that result at the level actually demonstrated.
Chemical demonstration: can this process occur under these specified conditions?
Historical explanation: did a connected version of this process operate in an environment relevant to life’s origin?
A result can be scientifically valuable while leaving its natural setting or its connection to later steps unresolved.
THE BOOKS BEHIND THE QUESTIONS
Otangelo Grasso’s books provide the investigation’s questions about supply, concentration, handedness, polymer formation, and system integration. Experimental claims are checked against the papers below. The author’s interpretations and arguments are distinct from the findings of the cited experiments.
This first section is a curated introduction, not a complete review of every origin-of-life hypothesis. Selected papers span 2009–2025. The 16-system cell is a target model, not an established description of the earliest life.
