The question behind this machine
The library discusses FtsZ within bacterial organization and division. The relevant bacterial material is used here; eukaryotic actin contraction, mitotic spindles and centrosome checkpoints are not descriptions of the bacterial Z-ring.L1 L2
A changing scaffold at the division site
FtsZ forms dynamic filaments that organize at the division site. In the bacterial study cited here, filament treadmilling was coupled to the motion of septal cell-wall synthesis machinery, and changing its dynamics affected synthesis and division. The ring is therefore an active organizational structure, not simply a static belt.P1
Assembly is spatial and temporal
A pool of FtsZ protein is not yet a correctly positioned divisome. Useful division also requires interactions with membrane-associated and envelope-building components. The relative contributions of recruitment, polymer dynamics and constriction must be established for the organism and growth conditions.P1
Precision with controlled turnover
The relevant constraints include polymer contacts, nucleotide-dependent dynamics and productive coupling to wall synthesis. Stable organization can coexist with turnover of individual molecules. A demand that every FtsZ molecule remain fixed at one atomic coordinate would misdescribe this dynamic function.P1
The origin target
A division phenotype does not show that FtsZ alone constructs a viable daughter cell. Inheritance, envelope growth and physical separation are distinct requirements. Alternative bacterial division strategies and possible earlier physical routes matter when comparing origins; the modern FtsZ divisome should not be assumed to be the only conceivable starting point.P1
Connected to the rest of the cell

Hallmarks of design
FtsZ illustrates the following organizational features in the supplied papers. These descriptions identify biological functions; interpreting their origin as design is the author’s comparative argument.H1, H2
Nucleotide-dependent polymer dynamics contribute to the changing division structure.
Division must coordinate with envelope synthesis and chromosome inheritance.
