Fire at Turin Cathedral
A major fire threatens the chapel; firefighters rescue the Shroud.
The fire damaged the Chapel of the Holy Shroud. Firefighters broke the protective enclosure and removed the reliquary, saving the cloth.
On the night of 11–12 April 1997, fire swept through Guarini’s Chapel beside Turin Cathedral. The Shroud was stored in a protected case elsewhere in the cathedral during renovation. Firefighters broke the protective glass and moved the reliquary to safety; the cloth was examined afterward and reported undamaged, while the Baroque chapel suffered catastrophic structural damage.1
What the surviving source says
Contemporary reports and photographs document the rescue and the damage to the architecture. The emergency did not burn the Shroud, unlike the 1532 Chambéry fire, and the two events should not be confused. Public accounts sometimes turn the rescue into a miracle narrative; the historical record also documents the firefighters’ actions and the chapel’s condition.12
Historical significance and limits
The 1997 event is part of the modern conservation history of both the relic and its setting. It prompted a long restoration of the chapel, which reopened in 2018.23
