Division-associated membrane parts

FtsQ and related cell-cycle proteins support envelope-associated division functions.

How it works

  1. FtsQ/DivIB, MinE, FtsW/RodA/SpoVE-family and FtsX-like annotations point to different division-associated functions. Localization, membrane construction and spatial control are separate tasks.
  2. Compatible division proteins assemble near the developing septum, where membrane-associated components help coordinate envelope growth with the division scaffold. MinE-family annotation suggests spatial-control chemistry rather than a wall-building enzyme.
  3. Family-level names do not settle whether each listed protein acts in septation, elongation or a particular regulatory complex. This grouping is a functional overview, not an experimentally established assembly order.

Grouped by the atlas’s curated pathway map. The table order is not a proven reaction order.

Origins

Which membrane parts must be present for division to work?

Naturalistic proposal

None of the books searched discusses these parts in an origins context.

Design analysis

Division needs membrane-anchored proteins that tie the ring inside the cell to the wall-building enzymes outside, so that new wall is built inward exactly where the membrane is pinched.

The wider question for this part of the cell: origins for dividing into two cells.
