Ribosome
Proteins of this group that KEGG places on its “Ribosome” map for Aquifex aeolicus.
How it works
This map lists the proteins of the ribosome. Most ribosomal proteins of Aquifex sit on the ribosomal subunits pathway page; the four here are the remaining small- and large-subunit proteins that KEGG places on this map.
Grouped by KEGG pathway map. The explanation above is the atlas’s own; the map itself covers more organisms than Aquifex.

Origins
Could a protein-making machine like the ribosome have arisen without being engineered?
Cairns-Smith hoped there might be some other way of making peptides with more or less specified sequences, one that did not need detailed control and could have worked before life.
Cairns-Smith himself, a naturalist, writes that in the ribosome, the adaptor RNAs and their activating enzymes, the message tapes and the code, there is surely at least as much engineering as in Merrifield's automatic peptide synthesiser.
Ribosomal RNA genes are among the most conserved sequences in all life.
From the books: Cairns-Smith, Genetic Takeover and the Mineral Origins of Life, p. 55; Alberts et al., Molecular Biology of the Cell, p. 46.
The wider question for this part of the cell: origins for building proteins and folding them.
