Streptomycin biosynthesis

Proteins of this group that KEGG places on its “Streptomycin biosynthesis” map for Aquifex aeolicus.

How it works

KEGG places these proteins on this map because they handle inositol phosphates, which also occur on the way to streptomycin. Aquifex does not make streptomycin. One protein is related to the enzyme that makes inositol phosphate, and the other is a phosphatase that acts on inositol phosphate and fructose bisphosphate.

Grouped by KEGG pathway map. The explanation above is the atlas’s own; the map itself covers more organisms than Aquifex.

Origins

What do the inositol-related enzymes of this KEGG map do in a minimal cell?

Naturalistic proposal

None of the books searched discusses inositol in an origins context. Myo-inositol was first isolated from heart muscle.

Design analysis

KEGG places two Aquifex proteins on this map because of the reactions they share, not because Aquifex makes streptomycin. Their role in the minimal cell is not established.

From the books: Garrett & Grisham, Biochemistry, p. 211.

The wider question for this part of the cell: origins for conserved, but we cannot say what they do.
